A Confession From My Past

I was home schooled.

There, I’ve said it.  Really, it’s not that weird.

OK, back in the 80′s & 90′s, when we did it, home schooling was weird.  So, you caught me.  We were weirdos.

But now, really cool people home school their ankle-biters.  You know, like The Pioneer Woman and Heather from OMSH.  They home school their kiddos AND they still seem like socially apt, normal-type people.

So, now I’ve confessed.  I’m a 30-year-old, adult “survivor” of a home schooled childhood (not that there’s anything wrong with that).  I would LOVE to discuss or answer any questions you home schooling parents or home schooled kids or even you other people have on the subject.  Please e-mail your questions to:

dee@onawim.com

If I get enough of them, I’ll do a home schooling question & answer post in the not-so-distant future.

Whew!  I feel so much better now that my secret’s are all out there . . . well, maybe not all of them.

My question is: Wasn’t your family afraid you would not know how to interact with others when you got out in the “real world?”

My answer is: Yes, and they were right to be concerned. As you can tell, self-expression is a real problem for me. It’s a burden.

We love homeschooling and know it isn’t for everyone; we don’t preach that it is by any means. What we like best is this idea that learning doesn’t have to be assigned to an 8 hour school day. Learning is life. It is what we do from the time we rise until we go to sleep (and research shows we can even learn in our sleep – though I won’t let my kids try to get away with that toward school hours!).”

After MY school hours are done I’ll often find my children in the schoolroom doing anything from art to research; Emelie is writing book reports for National Geographic and learning video blogging, sewing crafts, learning to crochet figurines, and all manner of things. My other two are outside moving their bodies – playing in the neighborhood, in their fort, using their imaginations, and playing with kids in the neighborhood.

Homeschooling is just another way to get an education; we feel it is the best way because we are seeing a love for learning instilled in our children.

    Blessings!
